How to Choose a Titan Watch as a Gift

A watch is one of the few gifts that can be worn every day for years. That is also why getting it wrong is disappointing: a watch that is too big, too formal or the wrong colour ends up in a drawer. A few decisions made in the right order avoid most mistakes.

1. Start from the occasion

  • Board exams, a first job or graduation: a versatile everyday watch that works with both a uniform or office shirt and weekend clothes. A plain dial with clear numbers or markers, on a steel or leather strap, rarely goes wrong.
  • Weddings and anniversaries: something dressier, such as a slim watch, a gold-tone case or a matching pair for a couple.
  • A teenager or a sports fan: a sportier design, a bright strap or a smartwatch.
  • A parent or grandparent: legibility matters most. Choose a large, high-contrast dial and a strap that is easy to fasten.

2. Get the size roughly right

Dial size is measured across the case, in millimetres. As a rough rule, many men wear cases of about 38 to 44 mm and many women about 26 to 36 mm, but wrist size and taste matter more than gender. If you can, borrow a watch the person already owns and measure its case, or take a photo of it on their wrist to compare in the store.

3. Choose the strap with their habits in mind

  • Metal bracelet: durable and easy to clean, but it needs sizing. Bracelets can be shortened easily; lengthening one requires spare links, so keep the removed links in the box.
  • Leather: comfortable and smart, but it dislikes water and sweat, so it is less suited to very hot, humid daily use.
  • Silicone or fabric: light and casual, a good fit for active people.

4. Pick a dial they will read every day

White, silver, black and blue dials are the safest choices. Busy chronograph dials look impressive but can be hard to read at a glance, which matters for older recipients. If the person already wears a lot of gold or silver jewellery, match the case colour to it.

5. Set a budget before you walk in

Store staff will happily show you watches across the whole range. Deciding your limit first keeps the choice manageable and lets you focus on design rather than price.

6. Plan for an exchange

Before paying, ask the store whether the watch can be exchanged if the size or style is not right, and for how long. Keep the box, tags and invoice untouched until the recipient has tried it on. Ask for the invoice to be made out so that the recipient can use it for service later.

7. Finish the gift properly

Ask the staff to set the correct time and date and to pull the protective film off the glass only after the recipient has seen it, if you prefer. Many stores gift-wrap on request.
